The controversy arose during the presidential election on February 25, 2023, when the commission faced challenges uploading results onto the IReV portal, prompting public outcry. Jega acknowledged INEC’s efforts to ensure transparency and integrity through technology but lamented that certain politicians, driven by a win-at-all-cost mentality, hindered the commission’s progress.

Reflecting on his tenure from 2011 to 2015, Jega observed a recurring pattern where politicians sought to outsmart INEC by staying one step ahead in manipulating emerging technologies. He emphasized the need for an inquiry into the IReV issue, expressing the belief that politicians may have infiltrated and disrupted the system, placing responsibility on INEC.

Jega recommended that INEC disclose more information about the incident, suggesting a comprehensive public inquiry to shed light on the IReV’s failure. Despite the confidence expressed by the current INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, Jega asserted that accountability should be established, emphasizing the importance of investigating the matter once all legal proceedings are concluded.
