A political rift between Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, escalated dramatically on Friday during Vice President Kashim Shettima’s visit to the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The clash reportedly culminated in a heated confrontation between the Deputy Governor, Mohammed Auwal Jatau, and Minister Tuggar.
The altercation occurred inside a coaster bus transporting dignitaries — including Vice President Shettima — from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport to the Emir’s Palace. The group was en route for the turbaning ceremony of former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar as the Makama Babba I of the Bauchi Emirate.
According to sources, the tension flared when Minister Tuggar allegedly made unflattering comments about Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration. Witnesses claimed that an infuriated Jatau confronted Tuggar over the remarks, with some accounts suggesting the deputy governor may have slapped the minister — a claim Jatau later denied. Regardless, the incident underscores the growing political animosity between the two men.
This dispute is widely viewed as a reflection of the broader power struggle ahead of the 2027 Bauchi governorship election. Jatau, a close ally of Governor Bala, is believed to be defending the state administration, while Tuggar — a vocal critic of the PDP-led government — is reportedly positioning himself for the APC governorship ticket, with hopes of securing President Tinubu’s backing.
The public nature of the confrontation, especially in the presence of top dignitaries, has sparked concern among political observers. Analyst Comrade Sabo Muhammad warned that such incidents could stoke tensions and potentially incite political violence among supporters.
“This kind of behavior sends a dangerous message,” Muhammad remarked. “When leaders behave this way, it sets a troubling precedent that may embolden their followers to take drastic actions.”
The feud between Tuggar and Governor Bala isn’t new. Earlier this year, Tuggar criticized the governor’s use of President Tinubu’s tax reforms, accusing him of exploiting them for perceived presidential ambitions in 2027 — a move many viewed as politically charged.
This latest clash adds to Bauchi’s history of high-stakes political rivalries, including past conflicts involving ex-Governor Abubakar and former Speaker Yakubu Dogara, as well as a long-standing battle between Governor Bala and Senator Shehu Buba Umar.
Both Jatau and Tuggar hail from the Bauchi North Senatorial District — a region yet to produce a state governor since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. Their rivalry, fueled by divergent party loyalties and mutual governorship aspirations, has now added a fresh layer of political tension to Bauchi’s already volatile landscape.
