Residents are urgently calling on Governor Hope Uzodinma to declare a State of Emergency to address pressing issues related to roads, hospitals, schools, markets, electricity, water supply, and unemployment.

In conversations with our correspondent, several residents expressed their concerns about the lack of development in the area, emphasizing that their numerous challenges can only be resolved through government intervention. They criticized the government for failing to address their needs.

Residents highlighted that only a small fraction of local youths are employed in public services and oil companies. They accused some individuals of prioritizing personal gain over the community’s welfare.

Mazi Clems Okwu, a primary school teacher, urged the governor to repair the Umuagwo/Umuapu-Port Harcourt Road, describing it as a “death trap.” He also called for improvements to the Avu/Obosima/Umunwaku/Adapalm-Plantation Road, which poses similar risks.

Okwu stated, “It would be a joy if the governor could fix the dilapidated roads in Ohaji/Egbema, just as he has done for the Owerri/Orlu and Owerri/Okigwe roads. What is good for one should be good for all.”

Trader Mr. Ifeanyi Ogidi added, “We are development-driven and have never hindered the government or oil companies from fulfilling their commitments to us.” He dismissed rumors suggesting local youths demand payment from contractors to allow projects, labeling such claims as misinformation.

Ogidi further noted that the community possesses a spirit of discernment and hospitality, reflected in their respectful interactions.

Cliff Ojika and Ezeji Nkemakolam also lamented the government’s indifference to their plight regarding social amenities, stating that they continue to be economically exploited. They argued that the community deserves better development, especially given their significant contributions to the state’s oil production.

Nkemakolam concluded, “Ohaji, being one of the highest oil-producing regions in Imo State, should not be neglected in this manner.”
