Investigations reveal that the power disruption is a consequence of the Ossiomo Power Company’s lack of gas supply.
The power company provides electricity to government buildings, street lighting, select private residences, courts, the Edo State Industrial Hub, home to numerous micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as well as the secretariat of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Operators within the Industrial Hub expressed their grievances to journalists, citing substantial financial losses due to the ongoing four-day power outage.
This situation has resulted in suspended surgeries at government-owned health facilities, including primary health centers and the Edo State Specialist Hospital, to prevent potential fatalities.
Anxiety permeated the NUJ press center due to a lack of water supply, prompting leadership to close all bathrooms and toilets on the premises.
Journalists found themselves stranded as their phones and laptops ran out of power, forcing some to seek nearby hotels to recharge their devices and submit reports.
A frozen food dealer within the Industrial Hub lamented significant financial losses, emphasizing their reliance on Ossiomo Power for refrigeration. They were compelled to dispose of their unfrozen products, resulting in losses amounting to millions of naira.
A representative from Ossiomo Power placed responsibility on the gas supplier, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited, a subsidiary of the NNPC, raising questions about the competence of some of the personnel involved. While no sabotage is suspected, there are multiple entities with oil mining licenses supplying gas in the country.
