In his words, “As citizens of voting age in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States go to the polls for the governorship election tomorrow, I urge all electorates and politicians to avoid violence and conduct themselves in a peaceful and lawful manner.”
Jonathan emphasized the importance of refraining from activities that could undermine the collective peace and stability of the states and the country.
He expressed concern about the potential recruitment of thugs for violent purposes, asserting that a leader genuinely concerned for their people would not resort to such tactics.
He reiterated the principle that no political ambition should come at the cost of citizens’ lives, urging everyone to resist temptations and inducements that might be employed as agents of destruction.
Jonathan emphasized the necessity of credible, transparent, fair, and peaceful elections for the enduring impact of democracy.
In concluding, he called upon electoral management bodies, security agencies, and other stakeholders to carry out their responsibilities professionally and patriotically to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process, reinforcing the strength of democracy through the confidence of the people.
