Traditionally, the initial months of a new administration are considered a honeymoon phase, where the new officials are given the benefit of doubt and enjoy initial popularity. It’s rare for an elected official to experience a rapid decline in popularity so shortly after assuming office.
Surprisingly, a mere four weeks after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inauguration, a survey conducted by Dr. Malcolm Fabiyi and published in Sahara Reporters on July 4, 2023, indicated a 45% approval rating for Tinubu.
Despite the discontent and frustration stemming from the impact of certain policies, the newly introduced Stears Approval Rating (SAR) claimed that President Tinubu’s policies have garnered twice as many approvals from respondents compared to the previous administration’s policies.
However, this perspective contrasts significantly with the results of a random sampling conducted by this column, gathering opinions from Nigerians across different walks of life.
The collected ratings showcased the President receiving less than a 20% approval rating, predominantly due to the prevailing hardships affecting the entire country. This hardship is propagating poverty at an alarming rate that surpasses previous levels.
Through the random survey, Nigerians were asked to evaluate the Tinubu administration’s performance on a scale of 0 to 100%. The findings should raise concerns among all Nigerians, as only one in every ten individuals interviewed had anything positive to say about the Tinubu administration. The approval rating is plummeting at an astonishing pace, leaving analysts baffled by the rapid descent.
Common citizens, including taxi drivers, bricklayers, teachers, traders, and professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and civil servants, are collectively grappling with the impact of these policies.
