Benin City, Nigeria – The All Progressives Congress (APC) New Media Directorate has issued a strong statement calling on the people of Edo State to reject what it describes as Governor Godwin Obaseki’s “financial recklessness” and the alleged questionable legacy of his chosen successor, Asue Ighodalo.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a press release signed by the APC’s Director of New Media, Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, the party demanded that Obaseki account for the over ₦17 billion in monthly revenue collected by the state government. The statement accused the governor of failing to utilize the funds to improve basic infrastructure and alleviate the suffering of Edo citizens, despite the state benefiting from rising fuel prices.
“Edo State is sinking under Obaseki’s leadership,” the release stated, adding that despite the significant revenue inflows, the governor has failed to implement meaningful measures to address the state’s pressing challenges. The APC claimed that Obaseki has instead diverted resources to bolster the candidacy of Asue Ighodalo, who the party described as a “failed economic adviser” with a controversial history.
The APC’s statement also raised concerns over the state’s debt burden, which it claims has skyrocketed to over ₦500 billion in domestic debt, alongside substantial foreign debt. “Where has all the money gone?” the release questioned, highlighting the lack of progress in areas such as road infrastructure, electricity, and access to clean water. The party further accused Ighodalo of having a tainted past, including his alleged involvement in the 1990s Planwell Ponzi scheme and mismanagement during his tenure at Nigerian Breweries.
The APC warned Edo voters that another four years under the leadership of Ighodalo would result in continued financial mismanagement, political intolerance, and a failure to address the state’s mounting issues. The statement urged the people of Edo to rise against what it called the PDP’s “legacy of corruption” and to choose leaders committed to genuine development.
“The future of Edo is at stake,” the release concluded, calling for a decisive rejection of both Obaseki and Ighodalo in the forthcoming elections.
