Governor Fubara had claimed that some police officers fired shots, deployed tear gas, and used water cannons against him and his team as they attempted to assess the damage caused by arson at the state parliament building on Monday.
A video circulating on social media appeared to substantiate the governor’s assertions, leading to widespread condemnation from people throughout Nigeria.
In response, the Police Command in Rivers, represented by SP Grace Iringe-Koko, issued a statement on Wednesday, denying any deliberate assault on the governor.
Iringe-Koko explained that the anti-protest police officers stationed to protect the state House of Assembly were unaware of the governor’s presence among the approaching crowd.
