The governor conveyed this message during the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency’s Governor’s Award and Commendation Dinner held over the weekend in Lagos.
He acknowledged the agency’s significant impact on its target audience through various initiatives and advocacy programs, which aim to raise public awareness, rehabilitate victims, and ensure justice for perpetrators of domestic and sexual violence.
These efforts have encouraged more victims to break their silence and contribute to ending the culture of secrecy surrounding such acts.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hudenyin, noted that the increasing number of victims seeking the agency’s assistance underscores its widespread acceptance by the public.
He emphasized the government’s desire to see more convictions of individuals involved in such crimes as a deterrent to others contemplating such heinous acts.
He stated, “The rising number of victims seeking the agency’s intervention, totaling approximately 20,614 between May 2019 and July 2023, is a testament to the agency’s reach, acceptance, and impact on the population.
In 2022, 70 convictions were secured, and approximately 600 cases are currently in progress. This highlights the agency’s unwavering commitment and dedication to our administration’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence.”
