Shock Twist: Sowore Says Peter Obi Supports Government Actions
Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has said that the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, cannot be regarded as a true opposition figure in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Sowore argued that Obi has shown no real resistance to those in power and has not demonstrated the qualities expected of someone leading the opposition.
“I don’t understand why anyone calls Peter Obi an opposition leader,” Sowore said. “He hasn’t opposed anything the government is doing. He didn’t even mobilize his supporters to defend the electoral victory he claimed.”
Sowore further criticized Obi’s silence on major national issues, including fuel price hikes, and insisted that the former Anambra governor lacks the courage and political will to challenge the current system.
“My position in 2022 and 2023 is becoming clearer now,” he said. “The idea that Obi was a threat to the system was a myth. He was never equipped to challenge it meaningfully.”
He described the Labour Party as a temporary political platform, comparing it to an Airbnb. “The party was a short-term rental. Once they’re done with Peter Obi, they’ll hand it over to someone else. Maybe he’s hanging on now just for appearances.”
Sowore also claimed that Obi’s popularity in the 2023 election was driven largely by religious sentiment in reaction to the APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
“There was a religious response to the APC ticket. Christians wanted a Christian candidate, and Peter Obi was the most available,” he noted.
According to Sowore, true opposition involves mobilizing the people, taking to the streets, and actively challenging the status quo — actions he believes Obi has consistently avoided.
“If you call yourself the opposition, act like it. You had six million votes — even if you can’t bring all of them out, get 60,000 people into Abuja and see how seriously the government reacts,” Sowore said. “Instead, you’re discouraging protests. You don’t want real change — you just want to replace one elite group with another.”
