Governor Bago argued that Niger State is owed approximately N1 trillion in compensation for the hydrocarbon resources extracted from the state and consumed in the Delta region.

He contended that Niger has been supplying the entire nation with electricity for many years but has received nothing in return from the government.

The Governor declared that the people of the state have awakened, and unless their demands are addressed, they will take measures to shut down the hydroelectric dams.

During a meeting with the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, Tijani Aliyu, in Minna on Monday, Governor Bago emphasized, “We require a 13 percent derivation for the water supplied to the Delta.”

“Our citizens are adversely affected and displaced year after year due to the water flow from Niger to the Delta,” he added.

He went on to state, “The Federal Government must pay Niger State N1 trillion within the next three months for the hydrocarbon exchange, they must.”

“We have been providing this country with hydropower for an extended period; there has been no compensation for us,” the Governor noted.

“Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) must compensate us. We have awakened, and we will not tolerate neglect or abandonment again. The only way to ensure the federal government listens to us is to shut down the hydroelectric dams unless we receive payment.”

“This is not a threat; it is a declaration. We will claim every amount owed to us, every kobo designated for Niger State. We will not accept marginalization again. Our waters, lands, and borders are assets, not liabilities.”

“We demand compensation for our people. Every resource originating from Niger State must be duly compensated. We will not endure this any longer.”
