Following the court’s decision, the trial was adjourned until November 14, with Emefiele ordered to remain in the custody of the correctional service until he fulfilled the bail conditions.
However, anticipating the possibility of DSS re-arrest, Emefiele chose to stay within the courtroom after the session adjourned.
His lawyer, Joseph Daudu, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, expressed concerns about the DSS’s intentions to re-arrest Emefiele despite the court’s orders.
Tensions escalated when DSS agents at the courtroom entrance clashed with a senior officer from the Nigerian Correctional Service, who attempted to take Emefiele into custody, as per the court’s directive.
The confrontation resulted in torn uniforms, the evacuation of journalists, and court officials and visitors seeking safety.
As of now, the DSS has not provided a clear explanation for Emefiele’s re-arrest. However, a source associated with the case revealed that the DSS obtained an arrest warrant from a magistrate’s court, alleging that Emefiele was involved in financing terrorism.
The defense team expressed concerns about the warrant’s propriety, as they had not received a copy, and questioned the DSS’s actions, deeming them an act of impunity.
