Igwe Samuel Asadu, Chairman of the Council, made this appeal during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja on Sunday. He emphasized that the Council supports the calls for Kanu’s release made by South East governors, lawmakers, and the people of the region.

“As our son who has been in detention for a considerable time despite judicial challenges, we support the governors and other stakeholders in their call for his release,” Asadu stated. “We believe that his freedom would significantly reduce the current tensions.”

Asadu suggested that the government should ensure that any release would be managed responsibly, potentially involving some form of agreement or measures to address public concerns.

He expressed optimism that Kanu’s release would bring calm and joy to the region, highlighting the impact of his absence on his supporters. “If the President considers a pardon, it would greatly please us. We are continuously praying for his release and empathize with his and his family’s suffering. It would be a significant gesture from the President, and we would express our gratitude accordingly,” Asadu added.
