Wike emphasized, “We will consult with the herdsmen and engage in dialogues. We cannot permit cows to roam freely within the city limits. They should seek pastures outside the city. The natural order demands it.”

Explaining his stance further, he mentioned, “The city’s verdant spaces are meticulously cultivated for aesthetic purposes. They aren’t meant for grazing. Herders should rather make use of the ample grazing grounds available in the area councils.”

During his inaugural press briefing as FCT minister on Monday, Wike voiced his concerns over open grazing within the city centre. He highlighted that such practices tarnish Nigeria’s image, especially in front of international visitors frequenting Abuja. CONTINUE READING

It’s worth noting that this bold stance contrasts the previous administration’s passive approach. Over the past eight years, under the leadership of former President Muhammadu Buhari, there were numerous instances of Fulani herdsmen openly grazing their cattle in Abuja’s city centre. Despite the ensuing public outcry, no substantial measures were taken. The cattle were regularly seen roaming various high-profile districts, from Jabi to Asokoro and even the Central Business District, which houses prominent landmarks such as the State House, National Assembly, and the Supreme Court.

Reactions:

  1. Chijioke Nwankwo: “Finally, a decision in the right direction! It’s high time Abuja gets its due respect. Well done, Minister Wike.”
  2. Amina Yusuf: “I remember walking around Central Business District and seeing cows. It felt out of place. This is a needed change.”
  3. Suleiman Adekunle: “I hope this isn’t just talk. We need implementation and follow-through to ensure the ban is adhered to.”
  4. Esther Okafor: “Honestly, it’s about presentation and image. How do we want the world to see our capital? Kudos to Wike for understanding that.”
  5. Ibrahim Danladi: “As a herder, I hope alternative provisions are made for our cattle. It’s our livelihood.”
