President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to vote out state governors who fail to meet their performance expectations. The call to action came from the President on Thursday at the Presidential Villa. His comments were in response to requests from Islamic scholars who sought Federal Government oversight on the distribution of palliatives to states, intended to mitigate the effects of the fuel subsidy removal. Tinubu emphasized the importance of constitutional democracy and state autonomy in his remarks. “The citizens reside within these states. If I were to establish a monitoring panel, it would invariably involve interactions with both governors and local governments. We will continue engaging with the governors, but it’s crucial for Nigerians to hold them accountable,” he stated.

He added, “In a constitutional democracy like ours, it’s unprecedented for a president to sit and issue direct orders to states. My role is to appeal for the right actions. The people live in these states, and if they feel a governor isn’t delivering on promises, it’s their democratic right to vote them out.” CONTINUE READING

Recall that President Tinubu allocated double the usual FAAC amount, along with an additional 5 billion naira, to various states. However, several governors, including Obaseki of Edo, Yahaya Bello of Kogi, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, amongst others have yet to effectively utilize these funds.
