Where They Work Is Where They Chop!” – Bakare Explodes On Nigerian Judges
Founder of the Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has raised alarm over what he described as a deepening crisis of corruption and ethical collapse within Nigeria’s judiciary.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Bakare made the remarks while delivering a lecture at the 22nd Chief Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture, themed “Integrity Deficiency in the Justice Sector: Whither the Legal Profession?”
He referenced findings from the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) Nigeria Corruption Index, which indicated that between 2018 and 2020, judges were allegedly offered bribes totaling about ₦3.7 billion. According to the report, lawyers and court officials were responsible for more than 70 percent of falsified court documents.
Calling for urgent reform, Bakare urged judges and legal practitioners to emulate the values of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi in order to restore public confidence in the justice system.
The cleric, who once practiced law under Fawehinmi, warned that political interference, bribery, and selective justice have severely undermined the judiciary’s role as a cornerstone of democracy.
“In the report, the justice sector recorded the highest incidence of corruption, highlighting the systemic erosion of ethical and professional standards,” Bakare said.
He added, “A disturbing number of Nigerian lawyers no longer have confidence in their ability to argue cases successfully, while some judges now view the bench as their ‘work-chop’ — a place where they earn illicit rewards. The judiciary has increasingly become a marketplace where justice goes to the highest bidder.”
Reflecting on his time working with Fawehinmi, Bakare highlighted the late legal icon’s commitment to discipline, courage, punctuality, and diligence.
He recalled working as a research assistant at Fawehinmi’s chambers while studying law at the University of Lagos and later during his attachment at the Nigerian Law School, describing Fawehinmi as a lawyer who approached every case with exceptional rigour and demanded the same standard from his team.
“Diligence and integrity are inseparable,” Bakare said. “Lawyers who cut corners do so because they lack the discipline to thoroughly prepare their cases and develop arguments that can withstand scrutiny.”
