The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, underscored the significance of ongoing support from churches towards politicians even beyond their terms in office.
Naija News reports that Wike, former Rivers governor, conveyed this message during the celebration of Kingsley Ogundu Chinda’s birthday, the House of Representatives Minority Leader, held at St Mark’s Anglican Church.
Wike expressed his concern about a perceived trend where churches tend to distance themselves from politicians once they exit office.
He remarked, “The church should also remain steadfast, the church should also not abandon people when they’re no longer in office. When most of us were in office, there was no church we weren’t contributing to. But immediately we left office, it was a different story.”
Addressing the congregation, he urged them to uphold the values they preach by consistently supporting politicians, emphasizing that this support shouldn’t waver with changes in political status.
The event also featured remarks from the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abass, who praised Chinda for his outstanding service and contributions to the National Assembly.
Abass hailed Chinda’s representation of the Obio/Akpor Constituency of Rivers State, recognizing him as one of the National Assembly’s most valuable members.
Among the attendees were the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, former Rivers Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Desmond Akawor, former Nigerian Bar Association President Joe Okocha, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Vice Chairman South South Victor Giadom.
