According to the source, telecom operators are awaiting approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to raise rates for calls, SMS, and internet bundles.

“We are hopeful that the federal government will approve our request to raise tariffs. We understand they may allow us to review prices upward by the first quarter of 2025. This sector is struggling; there’s no new investment due to rising operating costs, and some of us are already incurring losses. We just hope the sector won’t be allowed to collapse,” the official stated.

The source also indicated that telecom tariffs could increase by as much as 40%. This would mean a one-minute call could rise to N15.40 from N11, SMS charges would go up from N4 to N5.60, and a 1GB data bundle could cost at least N1,400, up from N1,000.

Telecom operators have not been permitted to raise prices in the past 11 years despite increasing operational costs driven by inflation.
