In his opening statement, the UN Secretary-General emphasized the importance of action over mere words, reflecting the world’s need for decisive measures.

On September 20, 2023, Nigeria’s President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, highlighted six key points: (i) prioritizing Africa’s development through partnerships, (ii) investing directly in critical industries, (iii) upholding democratic governance in the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) region, (iv) addressing human trafficking, (v) securing Africa’s mineral-rich regions, and (vi) addressing climate change.

While some praised the President’s speech as bold, it allocated only a brief time to climate change and its intersection with Africa’s growth. According to President Tinubu, global collaboration should align with Africa’s specific needs in tackling climate change.

However, the speech lacked details on concrete steps to combat issues like the Great Green Wall Initiative, desert encroachment, and flooding. Furthermore, it did not outline new actions Nigeria plans to take to accelerate climate action or demonstrate leadership within Africa in meeting its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
