Justice F.E. Messiri of the Federal High Court in Abuja has handed down a conviction and five-year prison sentence to Abdulrahman Aliyu, a former Director of Echo Logistics. One of the charges stated that Aliyu, between July 2018 and July 2019, breached the trust placed in him as a Director of Echo Logistics Limited. He dishonestly misappropriated the sum of N250 million, which had been transferred by Alhaji Chubado Tijjani Babbi as investment money for telecom bill recharge card sales into Echo Logistics Limited’s account held at Jaiz Bank, where Aliyu was the sole signatory.

The trial, which commenced on November 9, 2021, saw the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) present five witnesses and submit nine exhibits. On April 25, 2023, the prosecution and defense delivered their final written addresses, after which the Judge reserved judgment for June 14, 2023.

In the judgment, Justice Messiri found Aliyu guilty on all three counts and imposed a five-year prison sentence. Count one carried a one-year imprisonment term with an option of a fine of N300,000. Count two resulted in a two-year imprisonment term with an option of a fine of N500,000, while count three also carried a two-year imprisonment term or a fine of N500,000.

Notably, the judge did not order restitution as Echo Logistics had taken responsibility and was in the process of repaying the complainant his dividends.

The conviction and sentencing underscore the commitment of the judiciary to hold individuals accountable for financial crimes, aiming to deter fraudulent activities and safeguard the integrity of business transactions in Nigeria.
