Speaking after casting his vote at Polling Unit 014, Elizabeth Fowler Memorial High School, Adeniran Ogunsanya, Surulere, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives described the election as peaceful but expressed concern over the low participation.

“So far, I’ve witnessed peace and a calm, orderly process—free and fair,” he said. “However, I’m a bit disappointed by the low turnout. It’s something we need to address.”

Gbajabiamila emphasized the critical role of local government in Nigeria’s democratic framework, noting that many citizens seem unaware of its significance.

“Perhaps people don’t fully grasp the importance of local elections—which, in many ways, impact them more directly than national ones. We must do more to educate and sensitise the electorate about the power and relevance of grassroots governance,” he added.

The presidential aide also reacted to the recent formation of a new opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), calling it a healthy development for Nigeria’s democracy.

He said, “It’s encouraging to see the opposition come together. It’s not the first time this is happening, but in every thriving democracy, there must be a credible opposition. Otherwise, we risk sliding into a one-party state.”

Gbajabiamila acknowledged the uncertainty of the coalition’s long-term viability but stressed its importance in maintaining political balance.

The coalition—which includes key figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—has sparked intense debate. While some view it as a potential disruptor in the 2027 general elections, others remain skeptical about its ability to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The renewed opposition momentum comes amid controversial remarks from former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who suggested that Nigeria becoming a one-party state might not be problematic if achieved through voluntary political alignment.

“A one-party state is not necessarily bad if it results from good governance,” Ganduje argued. “Look at China—it’s one of the world’s strongest nations with a one-party system. If other parties see the light and choose to join us, we won’t stop them.”

However, President Tinubu previously dismissed concerns about such a development. During his Democracy Day address at the National Assembly, he reassured Nigerians of his commitment to political pluralism.

“Nigeria will not become a one-party state. That is not on the table,” Tinubu said. “Still, it would be undemocratic to block those who want to join the APC.”
