Senator Abdul Ningi emphasized that most of the nominees were individuals seeking reappointment, and their credentials had been thoroughly reviewed. He highlighted the significance of the census, stating that the last population count in Nigeria took place in 2006, providing a population figure of 140 million.
The previous administration under President Muhammadu Buhari initially intended to conduct another census in 2022, later rescheduling it to 2023. However, the plan was indefinitely suspended just before Buhari left office, with the expectation that President Bola Tinubu would announce new dates for the census.
President Tinubu has since expressed his administration’s support for the upcoming census, emphasizing its crucial role in national planning. Senator Ningi stressed that conducting the census is contingent on the government’s political will, noting that Nigeria has not conducted a census in the past 11 years, contrary to the United Nations resolution recommending a census approximately every seven years.
Senator Ningi asserted that the National Population Commission is prepared for the census, with 75% of the logistics, including machines and personnel training, already completed. However, he emphasized the necessity of the President’s declaration to garner international support for the census.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the lack of recent population data, Senator Ningi urged the nominees to recognize the importance of their role. He emphasized that the census is crucial for national development, providing a foundation for strategic planning to meet the aspirations of the diverse Nigerian population. Senator Ningi concluded by urging nominees to approach the assignment with a national perspective, transcending regional or ethnic considerations in the population count.
