Akeredolu left Nigeria on June 13, 2023, for medical treatment and returned on September 9, spending about three months abroad.
During his absence, he had informed the Ondo State House of Assembly of his 21-day leave and delegated power to his deputy to act in his capacity.
However, since his return, the governor has not returned to Akure, the state capital, opting to stay in his personal residence in Ibadan. This has fueled concerns that governance in Ondo State is operating on autopilot.
Accusations have surfaced, pointing to the First Lady, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, for orchestrating the governor’s prolonged stay in power despite reported health issues.
The political landscape in Ondo State has been turbulent, with loyalists of Governor Akeredolu pushing to remove the deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, citing actions taken during the governor’s absence.
Aiyedatiwa has found himself entangled in a political battle since Akeredolu’s return. The governor’s loyalists in the State Assembly have initiated an impeachment process.
