The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained six individuals for their alleged involvement in vandalizing and stealing a transformer located at Tipper Garage, Mpape area of Abuja. Among those apprehended is Raymond Mailabari, identified as an employee of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
The other five suspects are Kabiru Muhammed, Aliyu Usman, Abdulmalik Alhasassan, Shafi’u Suleiman, and Suleiman Ibrahim.
According to SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, the arrests were made promptly based on credible intelligence. The suspects were intercepted while attempting to escape with the stolen transformer, loaded on a crane truck in Maitama.
Recovered items include the vandalized transformer, a crane truck, a blue Mercedes Benz with registration number PKN 497 XA, a white J5 bus with registration number RBC 228 XC, and an ash-colored Peugeot 406 car with registration number GSN 13 AA belonging to the AEDC staff.
CP Benneth Igweh, the Commissioner of Police FCT, emphasized his commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the territory.
In a separate development, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has been fined N200 million by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for allegedly violating tariff regulations. NERC announced the penalty through an official statement, stating that AEDC failed to comply with tariff guidelines, prompting concerns among consumers and industry stakeholders.
NERC found that AEDC applied the new tariff to all customer bands, contrary to the Order’s objective of ensuring fair billing practices. Consequently, NERC directed AEDC to reimburse customers in Bands B, C, D, and E who were billed above the allowed tariff bands specified in the Order.
