This decision was made following the tripartite meeting of the National Minimum Wage Committee, which commenced around 5 pm on Monday to discuss a potential increase in the minimum wage.
Conducted at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, the meeting resulted in documented agreements signed by all parties involved, including the federal government and the labour unions.
Akume, briefing newsmen on the meeting’s outcome, disclosed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to a minimum wage higher than ₦60,000. The following are key resolutions reached:
- President Bola Tinubu is committed to a minimum wage exceeding ₦60,000.
- No worker will face victimization due to the industrial action.
- The meeting was deemed realistic and productive.
- The tripartite committee will convene daily for one week.
The agreement was signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, on behalf of the federal government. Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), signed on behalf of organized labour.
