Sani highlighted that El-Rufai had never participated in an election before 2015 until he aligned himself with the now-defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC), which later merged into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to The Punch, Sani emphasized that he was already a known figure nationally, both in activism and politics, when he encountered El-Rufai. He recounted that El-Rufai had solely contested in the 2015 election and had not been involved in previous electoral processes. On the contrary, Sani mentioned his own electoral success without significant external support.
Sani remarked, “Buhari had to raise his (El-Rufai’s) hand for him to win the primary in 2015, and he (Buhari) also had to come to campaign for him to win. So, he was a product of Buhari.”
The former senator explained that their ideological differences stemmed from their contrasting approaches to governance. Sani highlighted El-Rufai’s confrontational tendencies and mentioned his own experiences as a former prisoner, stating that he was unafraid to respond to attacks.
He pointed out that after leaving the Senate in 2019, El-Rufai continued to criticize him for four years. Sani cited instances of governors removing senators in the past but stressed the need to allow them to proceed unhindered. He concluded that he would continue to respond to El-Rufai’s attacks even after his departure from political office, emphasizing the transient nature of power.
