This decision came about following the approval of a motion presented by Sulaiman Gumi during a session of the House on Thursday.
In presenting the motion, Gumi asserted that the book contains words such as “gay” and “eros,” which, in the view of lawmakers, introduce “gay and lesbian” concepts to children.
Gumi expressed concern over the “high influx of foreign educational materials introduced in nursery and primary schools in Nigeria which tend to teach and promote certain morals that are foreign and contrary to our cherished norms and values.”
In support of the motion, Bello el-Rufai mentioned that he had to remove his children from a prominent school in Abuja due to the inclusion of these words.
He noted that despite having lived in the United States for several years, his religious upbringing enabled him to maintain his values.
Consequently, the House has resolved to ban the book and similar publications that encourage a culture inconsistent with traditional norms.
The House has also resolved that the use of such books be considered a criminal act.
