In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari asserted that his administration’s achievements in the fight against corruption were unparalleled.
This statement was made in response to allegations made against him by former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adokie, regarding Process & Industrial Developments (P&ID), Paris Club, and the Ajaokuta steel company..
The statement pointed out that the cases referenced by Adoke as examples of corruption during the Buhari administration had their origins in a government for which he was responsible for administering justice.
Regarding the P&ID contract and subsequent judgment, Buhari emphasized that his administration inherited the situation but successfully halted its execution. This was accomplished despite the previous administration, which was responsible for creating the liability, being unable to prevent Nigeria from incurring over $10 billion in liabilities.
The statement further noted, “The Paris club saga that Adokie cited as an example of corrupt practices in the Buhari administration is not significantly different in origin and circumstances from the P&ID case. It had its roots in administrations preceding President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure. Adoke was part of the administration that laid the foundation for these issues and the subsequent judgments.”
“The logical conclusion that any reasonable person can draw from the P&ID, Paris Club, and Ajaokuta cases is that President Buhari assumed a rescue role and effectively safeguarded Nigeria from underlying corruption that could have jeopardized its economy.
The Buhari administration’s success in combating corruption is unmatched. New legislation was introduced, substantial recoveries were made domestically, stolen funds were repatriated from abroad, and they were prudently used for infrastructure development. There were record-breaking high-profile convictions, exceeding previous figures by significant percentages,” the statement added.
