In a statement released on Monday, April 29, 2024, by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81st Division Nigerian Army, it was revealed that Areke was detained in connection with human trafficking based on actionable intelligence.
The incident unfolded when the parents of the 22-year-old victim, Miss Fayoke Kunle, entrusted her to Areke under the impression that she would secure employment for her in Oshodi, Lagos.
However, instead of fulfilling her promise, Areke transported Fayoke to Kano State with the intention of sending her to Libya.
The statement elucidated, “The suspect was accused of abducting Miss Fayoke Kunle, the 22-year-old daughter of Mrs. Ainor Kunle. Mrs. Kunle entrusted her daughter to the suspect, who had pledged to secure employment for the young girl in Oshodi, Lagos.”
“Contrary to the agreed plan, the suspect relocated Miss Kunle to Kano, where the victim eventually realized her situation and overheard discussions about being trafficked to Libya.”
Demonstrating remarkable courage, Miss Kunle managed to escape from her captor and safely returned home on April 23, 2024.
In response to this distressing revelation, troops engaged with Mrs. Areke and subsequently arrested her at the predetermined rendezvous point, where she intended to collect her purported other victims.
Both the suspect and the victim have been transferred to the Ajah Police Command in Lagos for further investigation.
The Division emphasizes the importance of continued support from the public in providing timely information to assist in maintaining law and order.
“The NA remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering peace and stability across the Division Area of Responsibility.”
