This commitment was conveyed by Mr. Joseph Har, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Benue State on Security and Internal Affairs.

He made this declaration during a discussion with reporters in his office in Makurdi, addressing the surge in banditry in the Ukum Local Government Area of the state.

Har affirmed that Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration is fully dedicated to eradicating violent crimes within the state.

He highlighted that the recent visit of Governor Alia to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, to request assistance has resulted in a significant military presence in Makurdi, the state’s capital.

He outlined the government’s strategy, which includes both kinetic (forceful) and non-kinetic (diplomatic) approaches, as well as employing a combination of firm measures and incentives.

Har also mentioned that the government is actively engaged in building trust and confidence with the bandits.

He acknowledged that previous approaches were flawed, but the current administration is determined to correct them.

He emphasized Governor Alia’s sincerity and genuine concern for human life, citing his background as a priest.

The state has taken a unique step by appointing two security advisers, one responsible for security and strategic liaison, and the other focusing on security and internal affairs.

“We are in dialogue with the bandits, urging them to de-escalate their activities. I would point to the era of ‘Gana’ which was mishandled.

Therefore, the bandits may have reservations, but we have a Governor who is sincere, honest, and willing to extend a hand of cooperation to everyone.

Past mistakes do not dictate future actions. We are advising them to place trust in this government and the committed security agencies, who are pursuing a peaceful, forceful approach,” Har asserted.
