In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, it was highlighted that this request was made considering the significant role played by the refugee commission in delivering relief to those affected by various calamities.
During a courtesy visit to Tijjani Aliyu Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, Governor Lawal aimed to explore additional avenues for assisting those affected by banditry in Zamfara State.
The statement elaborated, “Governor Lawal’s visit to the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons was driven by the need to discover additional means of aiding individuals impacted by banditry in Zamfara State.
During the visit, Governor Lawal urged the Commission to give priority to Zamfara State, given the ongoing insecurity situation and the pressing need for humanitarian support.
He also requested that the Hon. Commissioner consider extending the refugee resettlement facilities established in Gusau to other regions of the state.”
Governor Lawal, in light of limited resources, stressed the importance of partnerships and collaborations to alleviate the suffering of over 2,000 refugees in Zamfara State.
In response, the Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, Ahmed, assured the governor that the Commission would continue to provide support to People of Concern in Zamfara and other states facing security challenges.
He also expressed gratitude to Governor Lawal for being the first sitting Executive Governor to visit the Commission since taking office.
Ahmed commended the governor’s dedication and promised that the Commission would address his request for additional assistance.
